OpenAI reportedly exploring smartphone with AI agents replacing traditional apps

Speculation regarding OpenAI’s hardware strategy has intensified, with recent reports pointing toward the development of a dedicated smartphone. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that the AI firm is collaborating with chipmakers MediaTek and Qualcomm, alongside manufacturing partner Luxshare, to bring this device to market.
Known for his accurate predictions on Apple’s product roadmap, Kuo revealed that OpenAI is engineering a custom smartphone processor in partnership with MediaTek and Qualcomm. Luxshare will serve as both a co-designer and manufacturer for the project.
According to Kuo, the device may bypass traditional applications in favor of AI-driven agents to execute various tasks. Unlike current platforms where Apple and Google dictate app permissions and system access, OpenAI’s independent hardware stack would allow unrestricted AI integration across all features. With ChatGPT approaching one billion weekly active users, launching a consumer-facing hardware product aligns with OpenAI’s goal of expanding its reach to everyday consumers.
This shift away from traditional apps is not unique to OpenAI. Proponents of vibe coding anticipate a future where applications become obsolete. Nothing CEO Carl Pei recently stated at SXSW that the era of apps is coming to an end.
Kuo predicts the smartphone will prioritize continuous contextual awareness. By owning the hardware, OpenAI can collect deeper insights into user behavior than a standard app could provide. The device will likely utilize a hybrid architecture, combining lightweight on-device models with powerful cloud-based systems to manage diverse user requests efficiently.
The analyst expects final specifications and supplier selections to be confirmed by the end of this year or early 2027, with mass production scheduled to begin in 2028.
Earlier this year, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, confirmed that the company aims to unveil its inaugural hardware product in the second half of 2026. Initial reports suggested the device might be a pair of uniquely designed earbuds.
OpenAI has not yet provided a comment regarding these latest reports.
