OpenAI to Phase Out GPT-4 from ChatGPT Soon

OpenAI is set to phase out its groundbreaking AI model, GPT-4, from ChatGPT, as announced in a recent changelog update on Thursday. Starting April 30, GPT-4 will be completely replaced by the newer GPT-4o, which has been serving as the default model in ChatGPT. However, fans of GPT-4 can still access it through OpenAI's API.
According to OpenAI, GPT-4o has shown superior performance over GPT-4 in various domains such as writing, coding, and STEM. "Recent upgrades have further improved GPT-4o's instruction following, problem solving, and conversational flow, making it a natural successor to GPT-4," the changelog states. It's clear that OpenAI believes GPT-4o is the next big step forward.
Launched in March 2023, GPT-4 was initially introduced for use in ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot chatbot on the web. What made several versions of GPT-4 stand out was their multimodal capabilities, enabling them to process both images and text—a first for a widely deployed model from OpenAI.
The development of GPT-4 was no small feat. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the model, which is reportedly enormous, cost over $100 million to train. It was later followed by GPT-4 Turbo in November 2023, which promised faster processing and lower costs.
GPT-4 has not been without controversy. It's at the center of ongoing copyright disputes with publishers, including The New York Times, who claim that OpenAI used their data to train the model without permission. OpenAI, on the other hand, argues that its use falls under fair use protections.
With GPT-4's retirement on the horizon, OpenAI appears to be gearing up for a new wave of models in ChatGPT. According to reverse engineer Tibor Blaho, the company is preparing a suite of models named GPT-4.1, which includes versions like GPT-4.1-mini, GPT-4.1-nano, and GPT-4.1. Additionally, OpenAI is working on the o3 "reasoning" model announced in December and a new model called o4-mini. It's an exciting time for AI enthusiasts as we anticipate what these new models will bring to the table.
