OpenAI partners ModRetro to launch voice-driven Codex plugin for Game Boy game creation
During the 2026 Developer Day, OpenAI unveiled a significant cross-industry partnership with ModRetro, a maker of retro handheld consoles. This collaboration officially integrates OpenAI’s AI-driven coding assistant, Codex, into the Chromatic handheld device, introducing a specialized plugin named Game Studio.
Game Studio eliminates the technical barriers typically associated with game development. Users can simply describe their game concepts and requirements using natural language, and the underlying Codex engine automatically generates the necessary code. The plugin also features a built-in Chromatic emulator, enabling real-time testing on a computer before streaming the finalized game to the physical device.
