On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced Study Mode, a new ChatGPT feature designed to foster students' critical thinking skills rather than just providing quick answers. When Study Mode is active, ChatGPT prompts users with questions to check their comprehension and may withhold direct responses unless students actively engage with the learning material.
OpenAI stated that Study Mode is being released to logged-in users on ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans starting Tuesday. The company plans to extend Study Mode to its Edu subscribers in the coming weeks—primarily young learners whose schools have purchased institution-wide plans.
Study Mode represents OpenAI’s effort to support the millions of students who use ChatGPT in academic settings. Research indicates that while ChatGPT can serve as a helpful tutor, it may also reduce critical thinking practice. A study published in June revealed that individuals using ChatGPT for essay writing showed lower brain activity compared to those using Google Search or no tools at all.
Following ChatGPT's 2022 debut, its rapid adoption in schools alarmed many educators, prompting generative AI bans in numerous U.S. districts. By 2023, some schools reversed these bans as teachers accepted that AI would become a persistent part of students' lives.
With Study Mode, OpenAI aims to reposition ChatGPT as a learning aid rather than merely an answer generator. In April, Anthropic released a comparable feature called Learning Mode for its Claude AI assistant.
Still, Study Mode has its limits. Students can easily switch back to standard ChatGPT mode to get immediate answers. During a TechCrunch briefing, OpenAI’s VP of Education, Leah Belsky, confirmed that the company does not currently offer parental or administrative controls to restrict students to Study Mode, though such features may be considered later.
This means Study Mode requires student commitment—learners must genuinely want to understand the material, not just complete assignments.
