OpenAI launches safer ChatGPT for teens years after they started using it
Following a series of lawsuits regarding the absence of safety protocols in AI chatbots—which contributed to teen suicides and other mental health crises—OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT for Teens on Monday. This new offering incorporates enhanced safety features and addresses the growing issue of academic dishonesty facilitated by AI tools in schools.
From an educational perspective, ChatGPT for Teens introduces a Study Mode alongside other tools aimed at fostering curiosity and problem-solving skills, encouraging users to engage deeply with content rather than seeking instant answers.
According to a blog post by OpenAI, Study Mode provides guiding questions and step-by-step assistance to help teenagers grasp complex material. Additionally, the platform includes homework reminders that trigger when the system detects potential cheating, prompting users to switch to Study Mode instead.
The application also features quizzes and learning visualizations, along with controls that allow parents or guardians to enable Study Mode by default, the company stated.
However, it remains uncertain how easily teens might bypass these safeguards if they choose not to comply. Young users are often skilled at circumventing parental controls and other digital restrictions. Until ChatGPT’s teen mode undergoes rigorous testing, the practical effectiveness of these safety measures remains unclear.

OpenAI states that app-appropriate protections are enabled by default in ChatGPT for Teens, designed to minimize exposure to harmful or developmentally inappropriate content. These safeguards are grounded in OpenAI’s Under-18 Principles within its Model Spec, which the company asserts are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.
Parents can utilize family tools and parental controls, previously introduced, to manage settings, receive safety notifications, and configure Quiet Hours, among other features.
OpenAI has announced a partnership with CodeAI to help teenagers better understand AI, including its mechanics, how to direct or question it, and how to use it effectively. In educational settings, OpenAI already provides ChatGPT for Teachers to offer schools institution-managed access to AI and support.
