OpenAI Launches GPT-Rosalind, Expands Into Pharma and Life Sciences
On Thursday, April 16, OpenAI released an early version of its AI model tailored for life science research — GPT-Rosalind. Named in honor of Rosalind Franklin, the scientist who discovered the structure of DNA, this model is designed to speed up drug development using generative AI. By drawing insights from vast amounts of biochemical data, GPT-Rosalind helps researchers with evidence synthesis, hypothesis generation, experimental planning, and protein engineering analysis, with the goal of turning long laboratory efforts into real-world medical applications more efficiently.

For now, the model is available as a "research preview" to selected enterprise customers. Initial partners include pharmaceutical giant Amgen, vaccine maker Moderna, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and the nonprofit Allen Institute. Technically, GPT-Rosalind has been deeply fine-tuned for genomics and chemistry, performing well on scientific benchmarks like LABBench2, and even showing potential to surpass human experts in certain prediction tasks. OpenAI also launched a companion life sciences plugin that connects to more than 50 professional scientific tools and databases.
This move marks OpenAI's formal entry into the scientific AI space, a field led by Google (DeepMind) and Anthropic. As top AI labs focus on medical data analysis and new drug development assistance, AI has shifted from a general-purpose chat tool into a research infrastructure.
