OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Personal Finance with Bank Account Integration
On Friday, OpenAI introduced a new suite of personal finance tools in preview for U.S.-based ChatGPT Pro subscribers. This feature allows users to link their financial accounts and ask questions covering everything from spending analysis to long-term financial planning.
To manage these connections, OpenAI has teamed up with Plaid, a financial data network. Users can link accounts from over 12,000 institutions, including Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. After connecting, a dashboard provides an overview of portfolio performance, spending habits, active subscriptions, and upcoming bills.
This launch follows OpenAI's acquisition of the team from personal finance startup Hiro just one month prior, in April. Hiro was backed by investors like Ribbit Capital, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI stated the Hiro team's financial expertise was valuable for the product's development, though it didn't confirm if they built the entire feature.
To access the tool, users can click "Get started" under the "Finances" section in the sidebar or type "@Finances, connect my accounts" in a chat. ChatGPT will then guide them through the secure account linking process via Plaid. OpenAI also announced upcoming support for Intuit, which will enable more advanced analyses, such as calculating tax implications from stock sales or estimating credit card approval odds.

OpenAI reports that ChatGPT already fields over 200 million finance-related questions from users each month. The company highlighted that its new GPT-5.5 model offers improved contextual reasoning, a key capability for handling complex financial queries. To enhance performance in this area, OpenAI collaborated with finance professionals to develop a specialized benchmark for the model.
With this integration, users can ask detailed, personalized questions. For example, they might inquire, "I feel my spending has increased lately. Can you identify any changes?" or "Help me create a five-year plan to save for a home in my local area."
Users maintain control over their data. They can disconnect specific accounts by navigating to Settings > Apps > Finances. Once an account is disconnected, its synced data is deleted from ChatGPT's systems within 30 days. Additionally, users can view and delete specific financial memories directly from the Finances page.
General-purpose AI chatbots often receive sensitive questions about health, finance, and personal life. Recognizing this trend, AI companies are now building dedicated tools for these high-stakes domains. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have released health-focused assistants, and earlier this month, Perplexity launched a financial research product powered by its Computer agent.
OpenAI's personal finance tools are initially rolling out to Pro users on web and iOS platforms. The company plans to gather feedback from this group to refine the product before expanding access to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
