OpenAI launches CarPlay-compatible ChatGPT
OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to its ChatGPT iOS app, introducing official native support for Apple CarPlay. This step brings the world's most popular AI assistant directly to the vehicle's infotainment display, enabling drivers to safely hold detailed conversations with ChatGPT via voice commands while on the road.
Under new guidelines from Apple in iOS 26.4, third-party voice conversation apps must pass strict compliance reviews to gain access to CarPlay. To minimize driver distraction, Apple mandates that these apps cannot display any text or images on the car screen—all interaction must occur through a voice-only loop.

Voice-Only Interaction: "Immersive" Conversations Without a Wake Word
In its interaction design, the CarPlay version of ChatGPT adheres to Apple's unified voice template, keeping only a core voice control panel on the interface. Notably, this version currently does not support a dedicated wake word; users must manually tap the ChatGPT icon on the car screen to start a conversation.
Furthermore, due to safety and permission considerations, ChatGPT on CarPlay cannot yet control vehicle hardware (like windows or climate settings) or iPhone system functions. It acts more as a knowledgeable "co-pilot," focused on delivering information, trip planning, or creative inspiration.
Regulatory Balance: Apple's Vetting and Limits for Third-Party AI Assistants
AIbase views ChatGPT's arrival on CarPlay as a major milestone in the evolution of in-car human-machine interaction, but it also highlights Apple's cautious approach to the in-vehicle ecosystem. By enforcing a "no-text" standard, Apple reduces safety risks from screen reading while still integrating third-party AI capabilities.
With ChatGPT leading the way, competitors like Claude are expected to quickly join the in-car assistant market. As intelligent driving advances in 2026, the key to winning in-vehicle interaction will shift beyond just voice recognition accuracy—it will hinge on which assistant can more naturally provide emotional value and logical support in complex driving situations.
