OpenAI invests heavily in Singapore to establish its first overseas AI research lab
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence leader, recently signed a multi-year partnership with the Singapore government. The company pledged over $234 million (about 3 billion SGD) to set up its first AI application lab outside the United States in Singapore.
Three Core Directions for Government Collaboration
The lab will serve as the core platform to deepen collaboration between both parties, with a focus on three strategic directions: helping Singapore's public and private sectors deploy cutting-edge AI, cultivating the next generation of local AI talent, and advancing AI technologies to benefit ordinary people and a wide range of businesses.
To reach this goal, OpenAI intends to work closely with Singapore's Ministry of Education and the Government Technology Agency. Together, they will develop AI-powered educational tools and launch a custom OpenAI Academy for Singapore, greatly expanding access to AI tools across the region.

Attracting Top Talent and Driving Global Deployment
Over the next few years, the lab is expected to create more than 200 technical positions in Singapore. These roles will cover a wide range of technical experts and engineers, positioning Singapore as a key hub for OpenAI's global frontline deployment engineers.
These frontline deployment engineers, a unique technical role within OpenAI, will work directly with enterprises and organizations to tackle the most challenging technical problems. This initiative arrives as Singapore accelerates its push to become a global AI hub, and it marks a key milestone in OpenAI's commercialization efforts in Southeast Asia and worldwide.
