Nvidia Chips Drive World's Largest Supercomputer for Quantum Research

NVIDIA has launched the Global R&D Center for Business via Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT). This facility houses ABCI-Q — the world’s largest research supercomputer designed specifically for quantum computing.
Quantum processors are poised to enhance AI supercomputers, helping solve some of the planet’s toughest challenges in sectors such as healthcare, energy, and finance. By delivering quantum-GPU computing at an unmatched scale, ABCI-Q represents a major step toward practical, accelerated quantum systems, according to NVIDIA.
Built by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), the ABCI-Q supercomputer uses 2,020 NVIDIA H100 GPUs linked through the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking solution.
The system incorporates NVIDIA CUDA-Q, an open-source hybrid computing platform that manages the hardware and software required for running scalable, practical quantum applications.
“Effortlessly integrating quantum hardware with AI supercomputing will speed up the delivery of quantum computing’s potential across industries,” stated Tim Costa, senior director of computer-aided engineering, quantum, and CUDA-X™ at NVIDIA. “Our partnership with AIST will drive innovation in quantum error correction and application development, both essential for building efficient, accelerated quantum supercomputers.”
ABCI-Q’s AI supercomputing capabilities are combined with a superconducting qubit processor from Fujitsu, a neutral atom quantum processor from QuEra, and a photonic processor by OptQC — supporting hybrid quantum-GPU workloads across several qubit technologies.
“ABCI-Q will allow researchers in Japan to address central obstacles in quantum computing and accelerate real-world adoption,” said Masahiro Horibe, deputy director of G-QuAT and AIST. “The NVIDIA accelerated computing platform within ABCI-Q will help scientists develop the foundational systems required to push quantum computing forward.”
