On Wednesday, Google revealed a series of new AI-driven features set to arrive on Google TV, including a dedicated section for short-form videos that will place YouTube Shorts directly on the home screen.
At the heart of these updates are enhanced capabilities built around Gemini. Within the Gemini tab, a “Create” button gives users access to generative AI tools named Nano Banana and Veo. These tools are initially being rolled out on Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the United States, with plans to support more devices in the future.
Nano Banana, Google’s model designed for image generation and editing, enables users to transform photos using simple voice commands. Users can swap out outfits, change backgrounds, or create entirely new scenes. Google aims to turn this feature into a shared experience in the living room, encouraging playful prompts such as asking the AI to design “a ridiculous outfit for my dad” to bring laughs among family and friends.
Veo, on the other hand, allows users to create video clips from scratch or bring still images to life by describing a desired scenario. For example, users can request something like “a video of my grandfather moonwalking in space.”

Google Photos is also receiving improvements on Google TV. Thanks to Gemini-powered search, users can quickly locate specific memories such as vacation photos or birthday party images without having to sift through the entire library. The results are presented in a user-friendly format that makes it simple to view images in full screen or start a slideshow. There is also a new “Remix” feature that lets users apply artistic styles like watercolor or oil painting to their photos.
Additionally, “Dynamic Slideshows” introduces animated layouts, frames, and color effects. Users can turn any Google Photos collection into a visually appealing slideshow suitable for display on TV by selecting Google Photos in the screensaver settings.

In addition to these AI tools, Google is also capitalizing on the growing popularity of short-form video. Soon, a new “Short videos for you” section will appear on the Google TV home screen, initially featuring content from YouTube Shorts.
This development follows YouTube’s recent addition of an option to hide Shorts on mobile devices, indicating mixed user preferences regarding the format. However, Google suggests that this feature might eventually expand beyond Shorts to include content from other platforms. Instagram already made its TV app available on Google TV devices in the United States earlier this year.
