Musk Reveals Tesla AI6 Chip: Tape-out by December, Rivals Dual AI5 Performance
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, shared on X that thanks to the acceleration of AI-assisted design, the company's sixth-generation dedicated AI chip, AI6, is expected to tape out by December this year.
Performance Leap: A Single Chip That Rivals Dual-Chip Systems
Musk is confident in the new hardware's performance and stressed the importance of hardware-software co-design:
Efficiency Doubled: At the same process node, a single AI6 chip is expected to perform on par with a dual-chip system using two AI5 chips.
Collaborative Optimization: Tesla's entire AI software stack is designed to maximize circuit efficiency, achieving deep integration between hardware and algorithms.
Application Scenarios: While AI5 and AI6 can be used in data centers, they are primarily optimized for edge computing in Optimus humanoid robots and Robotaxi (autonomous taxis).
Manufacturing Plan: Samsung's 2nm Process
The timeline and production details for AI6 are now clear:
Foundry Partnership: Tesla has signed a multi-year agreement worth $16.5 billion with Samsung Electronics, extending through the end of 2033.
Mass Production Timeline: AI6 will use Samsung's second-generation 2nm (SF2P) process, with mass production expected in 2027 and an official launch in 2028.
Manufacturing Location: The chip will be produced exclusively at Samsung's new super factory in Taylor, Texas, USA.
Alongside these technological updates, Musk also shared his thoughts on industry competition and future constraints:

NVIDIA Support: Musk publicly praised Jensen Huang, stating that NVIDIA's market capitalization is well-deserved. He confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla will continue to buy large quantities of NVIDIA chips.
Shifting Limiting Factors: He predicted that the limiting factors for AI development on Earth are shifting from chips to energy; once space-based resources are developed, the limiting factors will shift back to chips.
Global Competitive Landscape: Musk believes Google will win the Western AI race, China will win the Earth's competition, and SpaceX will win the space competition.
Tesla's AI5 chip is nearing completion, and while AI6 is still in its early stages, Musk has set an ambitious goal of completing a design cycle every nine months. Following that, the AI7 through AI9 series will also be released.
