Musk Plans Moon Satellite Launches and Space AI Data Centers

As Earth's energy supply becomes increasingly strained while demand for AI computing power surges, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has put forward a futuristic solution: relocating AI data centers to space, with the Moon serving as a launch platform.
Musk's vision includes constructing a large-scale electromagnetic catapult and a satellite assembly plant on the Moon. With the Moon's low gravity, no atmospheric drag, and ample solar power, launching satellites into Earth orbit using an electromagnetic catapult would be significantly more efficient than conventional rocket launches. Moreover, it would bypass the increasingly congested near-Earth orbital debris, creating room for large-scale deployment.
According to AIbase, Musk predicts that within the next 30 to 36 months, Earth's power grid will be unable to sustain the exponential growth of AI infrastructure, making space-based data centers the most economically viable option. Space offers unlimited solar energy, and once the energy bottleneck is resolved, the only remaining limitation for AI development will be chip manufacturing capacity.
The ambitious plan is already moving forward. SpaceX recently submitted a request to authorities for a single launch of up to 1 million satellites, with the goal of creating an "orbital data center" network boasting unprecedented computing power. Additionally, by acquiring its own AI company, xAI, SpaceX is accelerating the convergence of computing resources and aerospace technology. Musk disclosed that the space-based data center could become operational within the next two to three years, providing global computing support for advanced AI models.
