Moritz, founded by former OpenAI advisor, raises $9M in 4 days, redefining legal industry with software + lawyers

AI law firm Moritz recently closed a $9 million seed round in just four days, before even graduating from Y Combinator. The round was led by Y Combinator, Urban Innovation Fund, 20VC, and Inception Fund, and drew participation from prominent tech investors including Reddit, the founders of Runway, and current and former OpenAI employees. Co-founded by former OpenAI legal counsel Pamir Essas and machine learning engineer Stefan Mandaric, Moritz aims to transform the traditional legal services industry through AI-driven solutions.
Unlike conventional legal software providers such as Harvey or Legora, Moritz has made a strategic pivot from selling software to directly delivering legal services. Its core business model leverages proprietary software to support experienced lawyers in efficiently drafting and reviewing high-value contracts across a range of companies.
Over the past three months, Moritz has processed contracts for 100 companies, with a combined value of $2 billion. On pricing, the firm has moved away entirely from the traditional hourly billing model, adopting a transparent fixed-rate approach: small business clients pay per task (e.g., $500 for a work invitation), while larger enterprises benefit from tiered pricing for single contract reviews, ranging from $500 to $700.
