Elon Musk's AI company xAI is now facing a significant legal challenge. Reports indicate that three teenagers from Tennessee have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, alleging that its Grok chatbot was used to create sexually explicit images and videos involving minors.
Lack of Safety Testing and Design Flaws
The plaintiffs claim that Musk and xAI leadership were aware Grok could generate illegal content when "Stimulate Mode" was activated, yet failed to conduct proper safety testing on the feature. Court documents show that one victim found up to 18 AI-generated explicit images of minors on Discord, some of which were reportedly used as "trade items" by suspects in encrypted groups.
The plaintiffs' attorney argues that Grok has fundamental design flaws that prevent it from effectively blocking deepfake requests targeting minors. While the suspects have been arrested, their crime tools were enabled by xAI's technology.
Increased Regulatory Pressure
Grok has previously faced widespread criticism for its overly permissive content moderation policy, which was accused of easily generating fake sensitive content involving celebrities and ordinary individuals. Although X later implemented some restrictions, this child safety class-action lawsuit has placed Musk and xAI squarely under regulatory and ethical scrutiny.
This case not only deals a heavy blow to xAI but is also expected to spark broader industry debates about privacy protections and child safety boundaries in generative AI.
