Midjourney, known for its AI art generation, is now branching into medical imaging. The company revealed a futuristic body scanning system designed to produce high-precision 3D images of the human body in under a minute, using ultrasonic sensors and extensive data collection.
This concept system features a circular scanning cabin equipped with up to 500,000 miniature ultrasonic sensors, each no larger than a grain of sand. By gathering data from multiple angles at once, the device can scan the body from all sides and reconstruct internal images by combining vast amounts of signal data. Midjourney says this system aims to deliver clinical imaging comparable to MRI, while providing a more comfortable and less stressful experience for users.
To enhance the user experience, Midjourney imagines a scanning environment reminiscent of a luxury wellness retreat, featuring soft lighting, hot pools, and private rooms to ease the anxiety often linked to medical exams. This combination of health services and tech monitoring is tentatively named "Midjourney Spa."
While the technical vision is ambitious, Midjourney acknowledges that transforming dense, noisy ultrasound signals into clear, stable 3D images remains a significant computational hurdle. Given the immense processing power needed to handle terabytes of data per second, the project is still in the proof-of-concept phase.
Midjourney plans to open its first pilot center in San Francisco, with operations expected to begin by the end of next year. The company stated it will work closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), submitting early test data to pursue regulatory approval. Meanwhile, Midjourney has outlined expansion plans to bring these services to more cities by 2028.
From generating images to exploring the human body's interior, Midjourney's shift represents an effort to create a new service model in medical imaging. While the device is far from being fully realized, this push to make medical diagnosis more routine and comfortable certainly offers fresh perspectives for the health tech industry.
