Microsoft has officially introduced Copilot Tasks, a new AI tool that elevates Copilot from a conversational assistant to an autonomous "agent." This feature, which has been a core focus of Microsoft's ongoing development for Copilot, is designed to automate the planning and end-to-end execution of to-do lists using natural language interactions.
Copilot Tasks can pull scattered details from emails, chat logs, and meeting notes to create structured tasks, while also running independently in the background. It operates within a dedicated computing and browser environment, allowing it to work across multiple apps and services. This includes drafting and sending urgent emails, tracking flight or hotel prices to rebook automatically, and tailoring resumes to match job descriptions before submitting them. For sensitive actions like payments or communications, the system includes a manual approval step to ensure users keep full control.
Currently in a limited research preview, Copilot Tasks has a public waitlist available, with plans to expand testing in the coming weeks. Industry experts note that Copilot Tasks further blurs the line between automation tools and intelligent agents. By turning ideas directly into outcomes, Microsoft aims to reshape personal productivity tools. This step not only heats up competition among smart assistants but also signals a shift in AI applications—from aiding creation to a new era of "agentic AI" that handles tasks on the user's behalf.
