Microsoft is set to unveil multiple proprietary AI models at its Build developer conference in San Francisco next week. The initiative aims to engage the developer community more deeply and strengthen its AI ecosystem. As GitHub Copilot loses ground to competitors like Cursor and Claude Code, Microsoft plans to introduce a budget-friendly coding model that undercuts Claude on price, targeting cost-conscious developers through lower operational expenses.
Microsoft will also roll out several new iterative AI models across various parameter sizes, each tailored for common use cases like speech transcription, logical reasoning, voice processing, and image generation. These models will be available for purchase on the Azure cloud platform for developers.
These moves reflect Microsoft's push to cut dependence on costly external AI providers. GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot have long relied on models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Microsoft holds free access to OpenAI's models until 2032, but earlier partnership terms prevented it from building human-level AI before the contract renegotiation in April. As a result, models from Mustafa Suleyman's team haven't reached the top of global AI rankings.
With OpenAI's technology access set to expire in roughly six years, Microsoft's strategy is to lower internal costs for products like 365 Copilot by building a cost-efficient in-house model portfolio. This approach mirrors Google's and signals that the global large model market is quickly pivoting from a pure performance race to deep competition in cost and ecosystem applications.
