Amid recent market speculation about OpenAI securing significant funding and forging a deep partnership with Amazon, Microsoft issued an official response today, reaffirming the strength and centrality of their collaboration. Microsoft stressed that today's industry announcements do not change the previously agreed terms of their partnership.
Since their collaboration started in 2019, the Microsoft-OpenAI alliance has become one of the most closely watched partnerships in the technology sector. By addressing rumors of "competition and separation," Microsoft's statement sends a clear signal of confidence to the market.
Azure Remains the Only "Designated" Cloud Platform
In terms of compute and distribution, Microsoft has reaffirmed Azure's exclusive role. The statement notes that Azure continues to be the sole cloud provider for all stateless OpenAI APIs. This implies:
Distribution rights remain the same: API services purchased by developers through Microsoft or OpenAI are fully hosted on Azure.
Third-party requests: Even if OpenAI works with other third parties like Amazon, all stateless API calls must run in the Azure environment.
Core product integration: OpenAI's own core products, including the latest Frontier series, will continue to be built on Azure’s global infrastructure.
Intellectual Property and Revenue Sharing Remain Unchanged
Microsoft made it clear that the intellectual property (IP) relationship remains intact, with Microsoft retaining exclusive licensing and access rights to OpenAI’s models and products.
At the same time, the existing revenue-sharing model has not been altered. Notably, Microsoft disclosed that this revenue-sharing arrangement already accounts for potential income from OpenAI’s collaborations with other cloud providers. In other words, the more OpenAI earns, the more stable Microsoft’s returns become as a major investor.
Both Partners and Independent Explorers
Regarding OpenAI’s partnership with Amazon, Microsoft expressed a generous stance, noting that such a possibility was anticipated in their original agreements, and Microsoft is satisfied with the outcome.
The two companies explained that their cooperation agreement was designed to enable both to maintain a close partnership while retaining the freedom to independently explore new opportunities. For now, the process for defining artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the contractual definitions remain unchanged.
