Microsoft Ramps Up Proprietary AI Models to Lead in Text, Image, and Audio Processing

Microsoft is pressing ahead with its in-house AI model research at an unprecedented pace, aiming to build a state-of-the-art system that can compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in the years ahead. Microsoft's AI head, Sundar Pichai, made clear that the company's primary goal is to create the industry's most advanced model.
Under the latest disclosed strategic plan, Microsoft aims to position its self-developed models among the global leaders in text, image, and audio processing capabilities by 2027. This marks an effort to break its long-standing reliance on external partners in the realm of general-purpose large models.
Leveraging Compute Capacity and Early Wins from In-House Models
To support this bold vision, Microsoft is rolling out large-scale clusters of NVIDIA's latest GB200 chips. The company intends to boost its foundational compute capacity to the forefront of global capability within the next 12 to 18 months, laying a robust hardware foundation for ongoing model refinement.
As a milestone, Microsoft released a new speech transcription model on April 2nd. Test data shows that in 25 major languages, the model has outperformed current market competitors in 11 of them.
Breaking Free from Agreements to Achieve Technological Autonomy
Previously, Microsoft encountered numerous restrictions when developing general large models because of its agreement with OpenAI. However, after the agreement was revised and "unbundled" last year, Microsoft removed internal barriers and fully pivoted to the path of technological autonomy.
CEO Nadella stressed during an internal meeting that achieving AI capability autonomy within the next three to five years is the company's central goal. This strategic pivot signals that Microsoft will shift from an AI technology integrator to a top-tier developer with core autonomous capabilities.
