Microsoft is currently testing a new AI-powered text generation feature in Notepad. This enhancement is part of a Windows 11 update rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels, specifically for Copilot Plus PCs. The update also introduces AI-driven capabilities in Paint—such as a sticker generator—and upgrades to the Snipping Tool that automatically crops and resizes screenshots based on your selections.
According to the Windows Insider Blog, Notepad's new Write tool helps you "quickly draft text based on your prompt" or "enhance existing content with AI assistance." Simply right‑click where you want new text to appear, or select existing text to serve as a reference.
When you activate the Write feature via Windows’ Copilot menu, a prompt window opens for entering instructions. The AI‑generated content will appear directly in your document, and you can accept it, discard it, or refine it using follow‑up prompts. This functionality was first identified earlier this year in test builds of Windows 11.
Write follows two other AI‑enhanced tools tested in Notepad. Summarize, introduced last March, creates document summaries, while Rewrite—tested since November—adjusts tone, shortens or expands text, and rephrases sentences.

A new Copilot menu button opens a prompt where you describe the sticker you want. Paint then generates a small collection of stickers based on your input, ready to be added to your canvas or copied into other apps.
Paint is also receiving an AI‑based Object select tool that simplifies isolating and editing specific elements in photos or digital artwork.

While using the rectangle selection tool, the AI‑enhanced Perfect screenshot option intelligently resizes your capture based on content, though you can still resize or reposition the selection area before taking the shot.
Alongside this, the Snipping Tool gains a Color picker that displays HEX, RGB, and HSL values under an eyedropper cursor. You can zoom for greater precision by scrolling or using Ctrl +/- keyboard shortcuts.
Using Notepad’s Write feature requires signing into your Microsoft account and uses the same credit system as other AI‑powered Windows 11 tools. Microsoft has not yet announced pricing for these credits should they begin charging in the future.
