Microsoft AI Investment Plan: Anthropic's Bet Yields $3.2 Billion, OpenAI Weighs Down Returns

Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings report highlighted a striking divergence in the performance of its AI investments. While the company’s stake in Anthropic generated $3.2 billion in revenue, its position in OpenAI faced a $600 million impairment, underscoring a sharp contrast in returns between the two ventures.
Microsoft’s dual AI bets show early signs of divergence: one investment thrives while the other takes a hit
Following a $5 billion investment in Anthropic in November 2025, which included a commitment for Anthropic to spend $30 billion on Azure services, Microsoft has seen substantial growth in the value of this holding. Conversely, Microsoft’s 27% stake in OpenAI was impacted by a $600 million impairment this quarter, reducing diluted earnings per share by roughly 7 cents.
Despite the fourth-quarter setback, OpenAI’s investment remained profitable for Microsoft over the full fiscal year 2026, contributing $5 billion and boosting annual earnings per share by 67 cents. Microsoft’s core business also performed strongly, reporting $90 billion in quarterly revenue and $35.8 billion in net income. For the entire fiscal year, Microsoft recorded $331.8 billion in revenue and $133.7 billion in net income.
While the $600 million impairment is manageable for Microsoft, the diverging financial trajectories of Anthropic and OpenAI suggest a strategic shift. Microsoft’s carefully balanced approach to AI investments appears to be tilting in favor of the newer partner, Anthropic.
