'Micro' Apps Proliferate as Non-Coders Build Instead of Buy

Rebecca Yu spent just one week vibe-coding a dining app, motivated by the frustration of endless group chat indecision over where to eat.

Determined to find a solution, she used AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to build a restaurant recommendation app from the ground up, tailored to her group's shared preferences.

"After seeing stories about non-technical people successfully building apps through vibe coding, I knew it was possible," Yu explained to TechCrunch. "A week-long break before school gave me the perfect window to finally create my own."

The result was Where2Eat, a simple web app designed to help her and her friends make quick dining decisions.

Yu is among a growing number of individuals leveraging advanced AI tools to create personal applications with minimal coding knowledge. Many are developing web apps, while an increasing number are also building mobile apps intended solely for their own devices. Some registered Apple developers even host these personal projects in beta on TestFlight.

This marks a new era of application creation—often called micro apps, personal apps, or fleeting apps. They are designed for private or limited use by the creator and a select few, without any plan for broad distribution or commercial sale.

For instance, founder Jordi Amat described building a temporary web gaming app for his family to enjoy during the holidays, which he simply deactivated once the vacation ended.

This trend extends to figures like Shamillah Bankiya, a partner at Dawn Capital, who is developing a personal podcast translation web app. Similarly, Darrell Etherington, formerly of TechCrunch and now a VP at SBS Comms, is creating his own translation app. "Many in my circle are using platforms like Claude Code, Replit, Bolt, and Lovable to build apps for niche purposes," he noted.

One artist shared that he built a personal "vice tracker" to monitor his weekend consumption of hookahs and drinks.

Even seasoned developers are embracing this movement. Software engineer James Waugh created a web-based planning tool to support his culinary hobby.

Web apps and mobile

The proliferation of accessible tools like Claude Code and Lovable, which require little coding expertise, is fueling the rise of micro apps. These are highly contextual, niche applications that "cease to exist once the specific need has passed," explained Legand L. Burge III, a computer science professor at Howard University.

"It mirrors the lifecycle of social media trends—here one moment and gone the next," Burge III added. "Only now, it's the software itself that is fleeting."

Inspired by her success, Yu now has six more app ideas she wants to develop. "It's an incredibly exciting time to be creating," she said.

While no-code platforms like Bubble and Adalo previously simplified web app creation, the new frontier is building temporary, personal apps for mobile devices. The key shift is the growing awareness that anyone can generate functional code simply by describing their desired app in plain language.

Creating mobile micro apps remains more challenging than web versions, primarily due to Apple's App Store distribution requirements. However, new startups like Anything and VibeCode are emerging to simplify mobile vibe-coding.

Christina Melas-Kyriazi, a partner at Bain Capital Ventures, likened this app-building era to the rise of social media and Shopify: "When creating online content or stores became effortless, we witnessed an explosion of small-scale creators and sellers. The same is happening with apps."

Good enough for one

Despite the promise, micro apps present challenges. Development costs can add up with required subscriptions, especially for a single-purpose app. The process can also be time-consuming; Yu noted that while building her dining app wasn't technically difficult, it demanded significant hours, relying on AI assistants to clarify coding questions. "Once I mastered efficient prompting and troubleshooting, development became much smoother," she recalled.

Quality and security are other concerns, as these personal apps may contain bugs or vulnerabilities, making them unsuitable for widespread public release.

Yet, the potential for personal app development is substantial and will grow as AI models advance in reasoning, quality, and security.

Software engineer Waugh provided an example: he built a simple logging app for a friend experiencing heart palpitations, allowing her to track episodes for her doctor. "It's a perfect case of one-off personal software solving a specific, important problem," he said.

Another founder, Nick Simpson, built an app to automatically pay his parking tickets—a frequent issue in San Francisco. His app, in beta on TestFlight, has already generated interest among his friends.

Burge III believes such apps can unlock "exhilarating opportunities" for businesses and creators to craft "hyper-personalized situational experiences."

Etherington takes this further, predicting a future where people forgo monthly subscription apps in favor of building their own bespoke tools.

Melas-Kyriazi anticipates personal, fleeting apps will fill a role similar to spreadsheets like Google Sheets or Excel.

"They will perfectly bridge the gap between a simple spreadsheet and a fully-fledged software product," she stated.

Hollie Krause, a media strategist with no technical background, exemplifies this. Unhappy with her doctor's recommended tracking apps, she built her own web app to monitor allergies. She completed it in the time it took her husband to go out for dinner.

She has since built two web apps with Claude: one for allergy tracking and another for managing household chores.

"I thought, 'I dislike Excel, but I'd love an app for our home management,'" Krause told TechCrunch. "So I created one, hosted it on Tiiny.host, and added it to our phones."

She sees vibe coding as a catalyst for "innovation and problem-solving within communities that previously lacked access." She hopes to beta-test her health app and eventually release it to help others.

"The goal is to assist individuals managing health conditions and their caregivers," she said. "I truly believe vibe coding empowers me to make a tangible difference in people's lives."
