Meta is currently engineering a prototype for smart glasses equipped with continuous, multimodal sensing, as reported by the Financial Times. The device features a "super perception" mode designed to capture audio and snap photos every few seconds, enabling users to query Meta AI about the recorded content in real time. To address privacy concerns, Meta intends to implement a metadata-centric processing approach: instead of storing raw audio or video files, the system will extract relevant metadata and send it to the server for AI processing, ensuring that original media remains inaccessible to both users and the platform.
Despite these safeguards, the high-frequency capture capability has ignited intense debate over privacy. Given Meta’s history of scrutiny regarding facial recognition and audio eavesdropping, the company announced a system update on Tuesday to disable cameras if users tamper with the recording indicator light. However, the white paper reveals that the LED will remain off during "super sensing" or AI scanning modes, illuminating only when a user explicitly saves content. This design choice risks exacerbating fears of covert, continuous surveillance.
