Meta Unveils WhatsApp AI Stealth Mode, Enabling Private Interaction with Latest Muse Spark Model
On May 13, 2026, Meta unveiled "Incognito Mode" for both WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app. This feature lets users engage with Meta AI in a secure, controlled isolated environment, directly tackling privacy data retention concerns in large model interactions.
Once enabled, conversation records are not stored. The session automatically ends when the user closes the chat window, locks the screen, or exits the app, and Meta AI simultaneously clears the context information for that specific interaction.
From a technical standpoint, Alice Newton-Rex, Vice President of WhatsApp products, noted that incognito mode has moved away from the previous small model and now relies on the latest Muse Spark model released in April. To deliver a high-security AI experience, Meta uses its private processing infrastructure built last year, providing AI computing power without affecting the end-to-end encryption protocol.
Additionally, Meta is developing a follow-up feature called "Side Chat," which will allow users to privately call AI within group chats without switching contexts, enabling seamless non-transparent information retrieval and decision support.
Against a backdrop of rising compliance risks across the industry, Meta's move directly responds to privacy features from competitors like ChatGPT and Claude, while also strategically addressing recent legal concerns that AI chat records could be used as evidence in lawsuits.
