Meta rolls out AI to handle content moderation as part of cost-cutting and efficiency drive

As Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg doubles down on artificial intelligence, the company is reshaping its internal workflows. To cut costs and boost efficiency, Meta is fast-tracking its "AI review" initiative, seeking to phase out human moderators in favor of large language models.
According to the Financial Times, Meta has embedded AI deeply into its content and ad compliance checks. Currently, large language models handle roughly 50% of content review requests automatically. The company aims to minimize human involvement by year-end, potentially reducing human moderator participation in specific violation reviews by over 90%.
Historically, Meta managed platform content through a hybrid approach combining automated systems with human review, including extensive third-party contractors. User appeals were typically processed by people. However, as large model technology matures, this reliance on human screening is being dismantled.
This shift is supported by Zuckerberg’s heavy investment in AI infrastructure and talent. His vision includes creating a "personal super intelligence" that not only ensures content compliance but also delivers highly customized AI products and intelligent agent services to users.
For Meta, this transition promises to save billions in annual operational costs. While the strategy boosts technical efficiency, questions remain about whether AI can fully replace human judgment in complex or controversial scenarios. As the year-end deadline nears, this "AI takeover" of platform governance is moving into a critical implementation stage.
