Basic computing power for the era of large language models is becoming accessible to everyone. On World Telecommunication Day, China's three major telecom operators officially entered the market by bundling Tokens—the smallest unit of AI model processing—into monthly plans similar to mobile data packages, allowing direct payment via phone credit and cross-platform use.
This move dismantles the previous barriers imposed by internet giants' exclusive model pricing. Leveraging their robust computing networks, the three operators enable ordinary users, developers, and small businesses to purchase basic AI computing power as easily as topping up phone credit or buying data plans.
Starting at 9.9 yuan with cross-platform and multi-model compatibility
China Telecom was the first to roll out a nationwide trial commercial package, offering Light, Smooth, and Premium tiers for individuals and families starting at 9.9 yuan per month. For developers and SMEs with higher demands, it designed an Ultimate package up to 299.9 yuan per month, providing up to 150 million Tokens monthly.
China Mobile took a province-by-province approach, with different strategies across regions. For instance, Shanghai Mobile introduced a highly flexible pricing of 1 yuan for 400,000 Tokens, while Beijing Mobile launched a package of 24.99 yuan for 10 million Tokens, offering substantial discounts to existing cloud PC users.
Operators accelerate their transformation into computing power providers
China Unicom focused on blending benefits with business services in this initiative. In Shanghai, enterprise users receive a free trial quota of up to 30 million Tokens. In Hubei and other regions, China Unicom integrated Token quotas with traditional voice, broadband, and AI cloud desktop services, launching diverse computing power packages.
Facing the industry bottleneck of traditional telecom services nearing their growth ceiling, the three major operators are collectively accelerating their strategic shift from traditional "data pipeline providers" to "computing power service providers." While the direct revenue from Token packages remains limited in the short term, in the long run this low-barrier subscription model is expected to unlock the vast personal and small business AI market.
