Lady Gaga’s Partner Backs Biotech Firm Using Living Skin to Train AI for Beauty R&D

Operating away from Silicon Valley’s glare, biotech startup Outer Biosciences is reshaping the foundations of beauty and medical research. Co-founded by Michael Polansky, partner of singer Lady Gaga, the company addresses a critical industry hurdle: sustaining human living tissues outside the body for extended periods while integrating them with artificial intelligence.
Traditional biological and chemical innovations lag behind software development cycles. High-risk experiments on living humans are ethically prohibited, forcing scientists to rely on animal models, simple cell cultures, or lab-grown organoids that often fail to replicate complex human organ responses. Outer Biosciences breaks this bottleneck with a novel approach.
The company sources discarded human skin tissue from rigorously vetted non-profit and commercial biobanks, such as the National Disease Research Interchange. With institutional review board oversight and donor consent, the team extends living skin tissue viability in vitro to one month. While industry standards typically sustain tissue for only a few days—suitable only for acute toxicity testing—Outer’s method allows observation of slow biological processes like collagen remodeling, pigmentation, and barrier repair, which take weeks to manifest.
Crucially, Outer Biosciences feeds this long-lasting living skin data into a closed-loop, self-enhancing AI model. The model predicts which untested chemical ingredients may benefit specific skin functions and tests them in the living tissue system. Regardless of prediction accuracy, test results are immediately fed back to optimize subsequent iterations. This synergy between living skin systems and AI prediction significantly accelerates new ingredient development.
Regarding its business model, Outer Biosciences does not launch consumer brands directly. Instead, it standardizes efficient ingredients and licenses or sells them to mainstream beauty and pharmaceutical companies after passing safety tests. The company has successfully developed several commercially viable candidate ingredients and collaborates with pharmaceutical partners to investigate severe skin rashes caused by certain cancer drugs.
Though the team is small and runs much of its AI work on local servers to ensure data privacy, this low-key company is carving a new innovation gap in traditional beauty and medical testing through its unique “living skin + AI” dual-driven model.
