Insta360 is set to introduce an AI voice assistant for its GO Ultra thumb camera on August 7. The feature leverages region-specific large language models: Alibaba’s Qwen powers the service in mainland China, while Google Gemini serves Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and international markets. Users can hear translations directly through the device’s built-in speaker.
Powered by Insta360’s proprietary technology, this AI assistant combines the multimodal capabilities of the Qwen large model with the photo Q&A functionality of the Qwen App, utilizing a terminal-cloud collaborative architecture. The device handles local tasks like voiceprint recognition and intent analysis, while the cloud manages complex operations such as intelligent Q&A, mode switching, and real-time translation.
Users can activate the assistant by saying “Hey Kira” or long-pressing the capture button, even when the device is powered off. Key features include face-to-face translation, photo-based Q&A, and voice-based Q&A. The face-to-face translation mode is ideal for scenarios like asking for directions, ordering food, or shopping. Meanwhile, the photo-based Q&A feature, once authorized, can analyze content captured in the lens—such as road signs, buildings, or dishes—and provide detailed insights.
Liu Jingkang, founder of Insta360, believes this feature could “redefine the thumb camera.” This upgrade highlights how AI large models are rapidly entering consumer hardware, transforming smart cameras from simple recording devices into interactive AI terminals with advanced understanding and conversational capabilities.
