HTB AI Range Launches Practical Cyber-Resilience Training Exercises
The cybersecurity training platform Hack The Box (HTB) has introduced the HTB AI Range. This new offering allows organizations to evaluate autonomous AI security agents in realistic scenarios, with human cybersecurity experts providing critical oversight. Its primary objective is to help users gauge the defensive capabilities of AI systems and blended human-AI teams in protecting infrastructure.
Since AI models introduce new vulnerabilities on top of existing ones in traditional IT systems, deploying agentic or AI-based security tools requires rigorous validation. HTB's solution is a testing environment where AI agents and human defenders collaborate under realistic, high-pressure conditions to measure and improve their cybersecurity effectiveness.
How the HTB AI Range operates
HTB describes the AI Range as a simulation replicating enterprise-scale complexity, featuring thousands of continuously updated offensive and defensive targets. The platform aligns with established cybersecurity frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, NIST/NICE guidelines, and the OWASP Top 10.
In a recent AI versus human capture-the-flag (CTF) exercise, autonomous AI agents successfully solved 19 out of 20 basic challenges. However, in more complex, multi-stage scenarios within intricate environments, human teams consistently outperformed the AI.
This highlights that AI currently struggles with complexity and multi-phase operations, underscoring the enduring value of human expertise, particularly in high-stakes or sophisticated cybersecurity work.
Testing capabilities and bridging the skills gap
Enterprises can leverage the AI Range to validate the effectiveness of their existing security measures against AI-powered attacks, provide their security teams with hands-on experience against such threats, and develop more resilient, agentic AI-based cybersecurity tools. Hack The Box suggests these exercises can also help justify cybersecurity investments to financial decision-makers.
The HTB AI Range facilitates continuous testing and validation of cyber defenses. The company states this approach is more effective long-term than static audits or traditional penetration testing, aligning it closely with a Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) model.
Further addressing the evolving landscape, HTB plans to launch an AI Red Teamer Certification early next year, aiming to quantify the specialized skills needed to fortify AI defenses.
For now, it is prudent to view AI cyber ranges like HTB's as a valuable layer within a comprehensive security and resilience strategy. As AI technology matures and frameworks like MITRE ATLAS gain adoption, such tools may become standard components of enterprise security programs.
