On July 14, the Inner Mongolia Hohhot City Federation of Literary and Art Circles released an official statement confirming that the first-prize winning entry, “Sail in the Garden,” from the third edition of the 2025 Hohhot City Citizens’ Photography Bi-monthly Competition — themed “Artistic Rhythms of the Northern Borders · Light and Shadow of Qingcheng” — was actually generated by AI rather than being an original photograph taken by the participant.
The announcement immediately disqualified the work from online and offline entry, evaluation, and exhibition, revoked all related competition honors, and formally suspended the bi-monthly photography competition. It also launched a thorough rectification process and handled the responsible individuals according to regulations.
The controversy began with recent public doubts raised by netizens. The competition, organized by the Hohhot City Federation of Literature and Art and hosted by the City Photographers’ Association, had the theme “Fun and Chance.” Ultimately, one first prize, two second prizes, three third prizes, and ten excellence awards were selected. However, the first-prize winning image displayed common AI-generated issues, such as garbled text and “QR code” marks on the cleaner’s uniform, as well as highly similar facial features and hairstyles. Moreover, the distorted water pot and the unnatural water flow direction contradicted basic physics.
This case highlights the major compliance and review challenges that AIGC (generative artificial intelligence) technology presents to traditional image art competitions. As AI-generated images become increasingly realistic, the industry’s discussions around digital forgery and the limits of documentary photography have grown more intense.
The official’s decisive action and suspension of the competition demonstrate the rigorous stance of mainstream art institutions in upholding fairness.
