Grok 3 Boosts Usage to Record Levels

Last week, Elon Musk's AI outfit, xAI, dropped Grok 3, their much-anticipated flagship AI model. Grok 3 is the brains behind the Grok chatbot apps you can find on your phone and the web, not to mention the Grok experience on Musk's social network, X. With the AI chatbot market being as crowded as a Black Friday sale, it was anyone's guess whether Grok 3 would even make a dent. I mean, OpenAI's ChatGPT is pulling in a whopping 400 million weekly active users. But, lo and behold, the early numbers are showing that folks are indeed downloading and giving Grok a whirl.
Sensor Tower, those market intelligence gurus, crunched the numbers and found that worldwide and U.S. mobile app downloads of Grok shot up over 10 times each in the week Grok 3 hit the scene, compared to the week before. And get this—the daily active users for Grok's U.S. app jumped a whopping 260% last week, while globally, they climbed 5 times over the previous week.
Now, here's a bit of a twist: Grok 3's release happened to coincide with the Grok app expanding into new markets in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. So, some of that global growth might be thanks to that move.
But it's not just the mobile apps that are seeing action. Grok's web app, Grok.com, also saw a surge in traffic. According to Similarweb, those digital intelligence folks, U.S. daily visits to Grok.com went from about 189,000 to over 900,000 right after Grok 3's release. Worldwide, daily visits skyrocketed from 627,000 to a cool 4.5 million.
Those are some pretty sweet numbers, no doubt about it. But the million-dollar question is, can xAI keep the ball rolling and hold onto those users?
There's been a bit of drama that might put a damper on the Grok 3 hype. Over the weekend, the model started censoring some not-so-flattering mentions of President Donald Trump and Musk himself, which xAI blamed on a rogue employee. And just a few days before that, users found out that Grok 3 was saying that both Trump and Musk deserved the death penalty. xAI was quick to fix that, though.
