Google Unveils First AI Smart Glasses, Compatible with iPhone and Android
Google has confirmed the official autumn launch of its inaugural smart glasses. Developed in partnership with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker, this wearable introduces a new line of AI-powered audio glasses. Operating on Google’s custom Android XR platform for smart eyewear and AR/VR devices, the glasses feature integrated cameras, speakers, and microphones, though the lenses themselves remain display-free.

Google has unveiled two design concepts from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with both brands planning to release their complete style ranges alongside the product launch to cater to diverse aesthetic preferences. Every style will integrate Google’s Gemini AI system, deeply embedding it into the device’s core functions. Users can activate Gemini via voice command by saying “Hey Google” or by tapping the side of the frame to initiate voice interaction.
Functionally, Gemini leverages the glasses’ camera and sensors to deliver context-aware information services. Users can access reviews for nearby restaurants, identify cloud formations, or quickly decipher complex parking signage. Additionally, the glasses offer visual navigation features, providing step-by-step directions and allowing users to add waypoints based on their preferences.
Beyond information services, these smart glasses support communication and multimedia features akin to traditional smartphones. Users can manage calls, send messages via voice, and stream music directly through the device. The glasses also support photo and video capture, utilizing Google’s Nano Banana engine for intelligent image editing.
Notably, Gemini handles complex, multi-step tasks, such as ordering coffee through DoorDash. Google has confirmed compatibility with both Android smartphones and Apple iPhones, ensuring a broad user base. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly developing its own AI smart glasses, expected to hit the market in 2027.
Looking ahead, Google plans to release “display glasses” equipped with small lens displays that will project Gemini’s information directly onto the lenses. However, these advanced models are scheduled for a later release phase, following the initial launch of the current smart glasses.
