Google Unveils Android Halo: A Status Bar Feature for AI Agent Interaction

Google’s official video details the Android Halo feature, unveiled at Google I/O in May, which boosts transparency for on-device AI agents. Once activated, a status bar indicator lets users easily monitor background processes from assistants like Gemini.
Samir Samat, President of Google Android, explained that Halo reserves a specific status bar space to act as a communication bridge. This allows AI agents to push task updates and receive commands directly, enabling seamless interaction without switching apps.
When AI operates autonomously, users typically need to see progress, answer follow-up questions, or view results. Halo addresses these needs by establishing a system-level interface that streamlines interactions between users and background AI, marking a significant step in intelligent computing.
