Google to Boost Investment in Anthropic, Potential Total up to $40 Billion

In the fast-paced AI arms race, major tech players are making increasingly bold moves. According to the latest reports, Google plans to invest up to $10 billion in AI startup Anthropic—and that's just the start. Under its long-term strategy, the total investment could eventually reach $40 billion.
This massive deal would push Anthropic's valuation to a new peak of $350 billion. Just months ago, the company closed a $30 billion funding round. Amazon had previously invested $5 billion, with room for an additional $20 billion.
Computing Power for Equity: Full Resource Integration
Beyond direct funding, Google's investment includes deep integration of hardware infrastructure. Under the agreement, Google will supply Anthropic with 5 gigawatts of computing power and up to 1 million of its custom TPU chips over the next five years. Prior to this, Google had already invested around $3 billion in the startup.
This blend of computing power and capital is designed to give Anthropic all the resources it needs for large-scale model development, while also strengthening Google's role as a leading AI infrastructure provider.
Friends and Foes: Strategic Tensions Behind a Deep Partnership
Though the two companies are currently in a honeymoon phase, underlying competitive tensions are evident. Google executives have voiced concerns over Anthropic's rapid growth in the AI programming market. While they collaborate to fend off common rivals, overlapping interests in specific areas could eventually lead to direct business competition.
Valuation Surge and IPO Prelude
Anthropic currently finds itself in the eye of the storm, grappling with industry legal challenges and skepticism over its lofty valuation, while simultaneously preparing for its next capital market move. According to reports, the company is considering launching its IPO process as early as October this year.
