Google Tests YouTube Conversational AI Search with Text Summarization and Multimodal Aggregation
Google has started testing a new generative AI search experience on YouTube, designed to transform traditional keyword-based searches into a more interactive conversational model. This experimental feature, called "Ask YouTube," is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 or older, marking a shift from simple content matching to deeper information understanding and aggregation.

In practice, eligible test users can find the "Ask YouTube" feature prominently in the search bar. Instead of just displaying a list of videos, the system generates comprehensive search results that include long videos, Shorts, and summary text based on complex commands or specific questions from users. By clicking a dedicated button, users enter a specialized interactive page where they can engage in multi-turn conversations using preset prompts or custom text boxes to obtain highly relevant content, such as summaries of sports rules, brief historical facts, or short videos of a specific style.
This feature test reflects Google's strategic logic of using its advanced AI technology to strengthen the video ecosystem's competitiveness. By introducing large model-driven conversational capabilities at the search entry point, YouTube not only significantly reduces the effort users need to filter through massive video content but also improves the discoverability of long-tail content. As generative AI becomes more prevalent on video platforms, this "conversation as search" interaction model is expected to change how users acquire audiovisual knowledge and help solidify Google's traffic moat against emerging AI search tools.
