Google announced on Friday that it will replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones later this year.
In a blog post, Google stated it will upgrade more users from Google Assistant to Gemini "over the coming months." By the end of the year, Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or downloadable from app stores.
"We will also upgrade tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and watches to Gemini," the company added. "A new Gemini-powered experience is coming to home devices such as speakers, displays, and TVs."
Google said it will share more details with users in the coming months. Until then, Assistant will continue to function on the devices mentioned.
Ahead of phasing out Assistant, Google has focused on improving the Gemini user experience, particularly for those who depend on various Assistant features. For example, several highly requested capabilities have been added to Gemini on Android, including music playback, timer support, and the option to perform actions directly from the lock screen.
The shift from Assistant to Gemini was expected, especially since Google launched its Pixel 9 smartphone line with Gemini as the default assistant. Google highlights that Gemini offers more advanced capabilities than Assistant—at least in theory—and introduces new ways to get help and information through features like Gemini Live and Deep Research.
