Google Meet Introduces Live Speech Translation
At Google I/O 2025, Google unveiled real-time speech translation for Google Meet. This feature, powered by a large audio language model from Google DeepMind, enables fluid, natural conversations between people speaking different languages.
The speech translation in Meet instantly converts spoken words into the listener's chosen language. It maintains the original speaker's voice, tone, and emotional expression throughout the translation.
Google highlights several practical applications for this technology. It allows, for example, English-speaking grandchildren to converse seamlessly with grandparents who speak Spanish. Businesses operating internationally can also use it to facilitate real-time communication and collaboration among global teams.
Google states the translation latency is remarkably low, enabling smooth, multi-person conversations—a capability previously unattainable with real-time translation.

The speech translation feature enters beta testing for consumer AI subscribers starting Tuesday. Initial support includes English and Spanish, with Italian, German, and Portuguese and other languages arriving in the coming weeks.
Google is also developing an enterprise version for Meet, with early testing planned for Workspace customers later this year.
