Google launches Gemini Go, making large AI models accessible on entry-level Android devices with just 2GB of memory
As AI large models battle for premium smartphones, Google is targeting the budget segment. On June 3, Google unveiled Gemini Go, a new AI assistant for Android Go. This update allows users with devices having at least 2GB of RAM to access generative AI capabilities.
Android Go is an OS optimized for entry-level hardware, ensuring smooth performance on devices with limited memory and storage. Gemini Go is a streamlined version of Google’s large language model, designed to operate efficiently within these constraints. It replaces the legacy Google Assistant Go as the default assistant on Android Go devices. Users can activate Gemini Go instantly by pressing and holding the Home or Power button, without needing to install a separate app.
Despite its lightweight design, Gemini Go offers robust everyday functionality. It handles tasks like making calls, sending messages, checking maps and traffic, finding nearby restaurants, setting alarms, managing calendar events, and playing media. Additionally, Gemini Go supports image and document uploads, enabling it to analyze visual context for more natural, intent-driven conversations that surpass traditional voice assistants.
Google is rolling out Gemini Go gradually to compatible devices. Given Google’s typical update pace, users with 2GB RAM devices may face a wait of several weeks for the update. Nevertheless, this initiative accelerates the transition to modern AI assistants, delivering seamless conversational AI to billions of budget smartphone users globally and strengthening Google’s position in the mobile ecosystem.
