Google Launches Fake Call Detection to Combat AI Deepfake Impersonation Fraud
To combat the growing threat of AI-powered deepfake voice fraud, smartphones now include a system-level fraud defense. On Tuesday, Google officially launched a new Android security feature called "Fake Call Detection," designed to help users spot and block phone scams that use AI to impersonate people they know.
Telecom fraud tactics are evolving rapidly. With more users ignoring unknown calls, scammers have turned to building false trust: spoofing caller ID, and using AI deepfake technology to clone specific people's voices. For instance, a victim may see "Mom" on the caller ID and hear a voice that sounds exactly like their mother, but it's actually a fraudster using AI to fabricate an urgent situation and trick them into sending money.

To tackle this problem, Google's new defense will be enabled by default and run automatically in the background. The company likens its working principle to a "digital handshake" between devices: when you receive a call from a contact and both of you use Google's official Phone app, the caller's phone sends an encrypted silent confirmation signal to your device to verify the call is genuinely from their physical device.
If a scammer tries to exploit technical gaps to impersonate someone, that crucial initial confirmation signal will be absent. When the recipient's device detects the anomaly, it instantly triggers a secondary verification with the actual contact's phone. If that phone confirms "no call was made at this time," the victim's screen immediately shows an alert, urging them to hang up.
Importantly, this core protection network is based on Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology, which means the anti-fraud logic will be highly open in the future, enabling other apps and third-party phone makers to integrate it. The feature will first roll out on Pixel devices this month, then gradually expand to devices running Android 12 and higher worldwide.
