On Wednesday, Google officially introduced a new feature for its AI command-line system, Gemini CLI, enabling external companies to build direct integrations. Named Gemini CLI Extensions, the rollout includes initial extensions from partners like Figma and Stripe.
This move follows OpenAI's launch of apps within ChatGPT just two days prior, which similarly incorporated third-party tools into an AI interface. However, while ChatGPT app access undergoes strict curation, Gemini CLI extensions can be published without Google's direct endorsement or involvement. Available extensions will be hosted in public GitHub repositories and require manual installation by developers.
"Maintaining an open ecosystem is fundamental to our approach," Taylor Mullen, a senior staff engineer on the project, explained to TechCrunch. "Our efforts are built on creating an equitable platform where everyone can contribute."
The first publicly available extension was for Google's own Nanobanana image generator, which was shared on GitHub last week. Once installed, it enables users to create images directly from the Gemini CLI terminal.
Launched in June, Gemini CLI has reportedly surpassed one million users, with a significant portion being software developers. Interestingly, the tool is extensively used within Google for its own codebase development and maintenance, under close supervision by product managers, as revealed in a recent TechCrunch interview.
In an interview, Ryan J. Salva, Google's senior director of product management for developer tools, told TechCrunch that the feature aims to evolve Gemini CLI into "an extensible platform—a conduit connecting to other tools and instructions across your development ecosystem."
