Google integrates Gemini dictation into Gboard, challenging dictation startups

At its Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event on Tuesday morning, Google unveiled Rambler, a new AI-driven voice dictation feature for Gboard, its widely used Android keyboard app. This launch positions Google as a direct competitor to emerging AI dictation apps like Wispr Flow and Typeless, which have gained traction on desktop and mobile over recent years—though most have yet to establish a strong presence on Android.
Like other dictation apps, Rambler removes filler words such as "ums" and "ahs." It also understands mid-sentence corrections, for example: "I am going to meet you on Wednesday at our usual coffee shop at 3 PM… umm, 2 PM."
Google stated that Rambler uses Gemini-based multilingual models, which also support code-switching. Code-switching allows users to switch between languages mid-sentence—for instance, from English to Hindi—and Rambler maintains context without interruption. This capability mirrors how many multilingual speakers naturally communicate, a feature that most Western dictation apps have been slow to adopt.
Google said that Gboard will clearly notify users when Rambler is active. It does not store any voice recordings; audio is only used to transcribe speech. During the briefing, Google noted that because Rambler works across all apps, it is akin to "reinventing the keyboard."

Regarding privacy, Ben Greenwood, Director of Android Core Experiences, stated that Google employs a mix of on-device and cloud-based processing and has "invested significantly over many years" to ensure features are "safe and private"—a deliberate message aimed at users comparing Rambler to third-party dictation apps that may handle data differently.
Over the past few years, numerous dictation apps have emerged—including Wispr Flow, Willow, SuperWhisper, Monoglogue, Handy, and Typeless. However, most activity has been concentrated on desktop and iOS, leaving Android relatively neglected. Google itself released AI Edge Eloquent, an offline-first dictation app powered by its on-device Gemma AI models, on iOS last month.
Rambler is Google's most decisive step yet to bridge that gap. Initially, these new features will be available only on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones during a summer rollout, but they will eventually expand to other Android devices. The key advantage is distribution: Gboard serves as the default keyboard for the vast majority of Android users globally, meaning Rambler comes pre-installed for hundreds of millions of people. When a platform player enters a market at the operating-system level, standalone apps must offer a compelling reason—superior accuracy, deeper features, or stronger privacy guarantees—to justify an additional download.
For dictation startups, the question has shifted from whether they can create something good to whether they can create something good enough that users will actively seek it out.
