With generative AI entering a pivotal stage of automated execution, technology leader Google is speeding up the consolidation of its internal tech stack. Recent reports confirm that Google will shut down its experimental web automation initiative, Project Mariner, on May 4th. While this standalone project has concluded, its core technologies have not been abandoned; instead, they've been fully incorporated into flagship products like Gemini Agent and AI Mode.
As a key experiment by Google in the AI agent space, Project Mariner—launched in late 2024—was built around the value proposition of replacing manual user operations. It can parse intricate cross-site instructions and independently carry out multi-step tasks. Through recent technical updates, the project showcased the ability to manage up to 10 tasks simultaneously, establishing a new performance standard for web proxy tools.
Rather than a true shutdown, this move appears to be a transition. Over the past year, Google has been busy integrating Mariner's automation capabilities into its broader ecosystem. Shortly after, Chrome introduced a new AI feature called "auto-browse," which similarly centers on automating multi-step tasks.
Industry analysts view these moves as Google 's direct counter to competing web proxy tools. By turning isolated experimental projects into core product features, Google aims to deepen its competitive moat in the AI agent race, capitalizing on its vast user base and browser ecosystem.
