The tech world is buzzing with a startling prediction from Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, who recently stated that the pace of artificial general intelligence (AGI) development is far exceeding industry expectations. The Nobel laureate believes AGI with human-like abilities could emerge as early as 2029 or 2030, meaning key breakthroughs may happen within the next three years.
Hassabis noted that major tech firms are ramping up investments, enabling core technologies like multimodal understanding, autonomous decision-making, and AI agents to mature quickly. He views current AI agents as early prototypes of more powerful future systems. The arrival of AGI, he says, will be a rapid, continuous evolution rather than a single, abrupt singularity.
Disrupting Traditional Frameworks and Emerging Challenges
Unlike narrow AI that only performs specific tasks, AGI possesses human-like learning, reasoning, and creative abilities, allowing it to solve complex real-world problems across diverse fields. Hassabis issued a stark warning: future AI systems will have the capacity to self-optimize and iterate autonomously.
