Google cuts Google AI Plus monthly fee to $4.99, doubles storage to 400GB
June 9 news — Google has significantly cut the price of its budget-friendly AI subscription plan, Google AI Plus, dropping the monthly fee from $7.99 to $4.99 while doubling cloud storage from 200GB to 400GB.
Vikas Kansal, product lead for Gemini AI subscriptions, confirmed the storage upgrade will reach users worldwide over the next few days. Since launching in January this year, Google AI Plus has been tailored mainly for individual users and students, offering features like video generation through Omni Flash, the creative studio Google Flow, and the AI research assistant NotebookLM.

This price reduction signals that the AI pricing war, previously concentrated in emerging markets, is now expanding into the U.S. market. In August last year, OpenAI introduced a low-cost ChatGPT Go plan in India for roughly $4.60 per month; by December, Google followed with a similar sub-$5 AI Plus offering in the same region.
Industry investors note that as Google leverages vertical integration, distribution channels, and bundling advantages to lower customer acquisition costs, pure frontier model providers are seeing their profit margins increasingly squeezed. This trend suggests that the AI infrastructure layer — including model makers like OpenAI and Anthropic, along with backend components and hosting services — is moving toward commoditization at a faster pace. With both OpenAI and Anthropic having quietly submitted listing applications, the intensifying market competition will directly test the sustainability of their high valuations.
