Google has once again demonstrated its ruthless efficiency, this time eliminating a product that never officially launched.
Google AI Studio, the highly anticipated standalone app, made its debut at the May Google I/O Developer Conference. Originally designed for Android and iOS, it promised developers and creators a mobile workspace to capture inspiration, build, test, iterate, and launch AI applications on the go. Before its release, pre-orders on the Apple App Store and Google Play attracted around 800,000 users from 168 countries, highlighting strong demand for mobile AI creation tools.
Just before launch, the AI Studio team announced a strategic pivot, canceling the standalone mobile app. Google explained that instead of asking users to download a new application, they would adopt a different approach.
While the standalone app is gone, its core capabilities remain. AI Studio’s functions will be integrated into the main Gemini app on mobile and desktop. This positions Gemini as a comprehensive hub, where AI application generation, creation, and prototyping emerge naturally during daily conversations. Both users and developers will access customized development experiences within their regular chats.
Google has assured pre-order users that these powerful features will be included in future Gemini updates. The web version of Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com) will continue to operate independently, receiving ongoing investment and upgrades as the primary platform for turning ideas into commercial applications. This absorption of a pre-launch product reflects Google’s clear strategy: consolidating all AI entry points into a single central hub—Gemini.
