Google AI Search Surges as 43% of Results Now Include AI Summaries, Leading to Decline of Traditional Web Content

A recent report from Similarweb highlights a clear trend: artificial intelligence-powered search is swiftly transforming conventional search methods. Specifically, Google’s AI Overview feature appears in search results at a much higher rate now — up from 15% a year earlier to 43% — indicating that AI-driven information retrieval is gradually becoming the standard user experience.

Statistics show that traffic to Google’s AI mode surged from 126 million visits in June 2025 to 279 million visits in May 2026, representing a more than two-fold increase. Along with this rise, user search behavior is also evolving significantly; many people are now using longer, more conversational queries instead of the short keyword-based searches that were common before. As a result, searching is shifting from simply helping users locate web pages to directly delivering answers to them.

While the number of reference links in search results has increased by fivefold over the past year, this growth does not necessarily translate into corresponding traffic increases.

This shift has had a major impact on how internet traffic is distributed. Traditional publishers and content websites are now facing the challenge of AI-generated summaries stealing traffic away from them, as users often obtain answers directly on the search results page without even visiting the original website.

Data indicates that the proportion of search responses containing AI references has grown by more than fivefold in the past year. However, having reference links does not guarantee more traffic. For instance, in the U.S. market as of May 2026, only 6.8% of desktop search queries related to ChatGPT included such reference links. That said, there are notable differences across different industries — sectors such as travel, retail, and sports tend to see more AI search references, and they also benefit the most in terms of increased traffic.

For content creators, this development isn’t entirely negative. Following Google’s search update on May 7, 2026, web referral traffic from ChatGPT to U.S. desktop users improved substantially. By the end of May, the share of web visits originating from these referrals rose from 25% to nearly 60%. This suggests that even as AI products start prioritizing reference links and redirecting traffic, there remains room for growth within the content ecosystem.
