AI chatbots are currently locked in a fierce battle for consumer attention. Major providers are all racing to grow their user base, and Google has just pulled off a small coup by making it much simpler for users of rival chatbots to switch to Gemini.
On Thursday, Google introduced what it calls "switching tools" – widgets that let users transfer "memories" (personal data snippets) and even complete chat histories from other chatbots directly into Gemini. This makes it easy to share key preferences, relationships, and personal context, according to the company.
The goal is to lower the barrier to adopting Google's AI assistant by eliminating the need for users to spend time retraining Gemini about their identity and preferences.
Here's how the memory feature works: Gemini suggests a prompt for the user to input into their current chatbot, which then generates a response that can be copied and pasted back into Gemini. Through this process, Gemini guides the user on the useful information it needs to know, while also enabling the transfer of that data into its own archive.

"Once you import these memories, Gemini will grasp the same key facts you've shared with other apps – like your interests, your sibling's name, or where you grew up," the company says. "Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you."
For importing chat histories, Google says you simply upload them in a zip file. Exporting chat logs via zip archives is straightforward from most chatbots – including ChatGPT and Claude. This lets users "seamlessly pick up right where you left off," according to the company. Google also notes that users can search through those old chats.
ChatGPT still dominates the consumer chatbot market, with OpenAI reporting last month that it has hit 900 million weekly active users. Gemini, despite leveraging Google's extensive distribution advantages such as its default placement on Android devices and Chrome browser, has struggled to gain consumer mindshare. Last month, during Alphabet's Q4 earnings call, Google revealed that Gemini had surpassed 750 million monthly active users. This latest move is clearly intended to help Google close the gap.
