Douyin's AI short plays hit 44,000 in April, 13 times live-action series, but only 0.6% reach 100 million views

According to the latest data from DataEye Research Institute shared with First Financial, the Douyin platform added 44,200 AI-generated dramas and anime series in April alone. During the same period, only 3,248 new live-action short videos appeared, meaning AI short video output surpassed live-action short video output by more than 13 times. These figures show that generative AI technology in film and TV production has entered an explosive growth phase, dramatically lowering the barriers to content creation and marginal costs, and enabling an industrial leap in production capacity.
However, despite the explosive output, AI short videos face a high elimination rate and a polarization challenge. Data reveals that among the 44,200 AI videos added on Douyin in April, just 267 achieved over 100 million views, a hit rate of only 0.6%. According to the "China AI Film and Television Development Report (2025-2026)", by the end of February 2026, the total number of AI dramas and anime series streaming online had reached 127,800, yet fewer than 150 works surpassed 100 million views, accounting for less than 0.117%. This means that, on average, only one out of every 1,000 AI works successfully completes the traffic loop.
