Doubao Unveils Paid Subscription Tiers, Rivaling Global Giants on Cost-Effectiveness
The commercialization of AI large model services has reached a pivotal milestone. On June 24, Douyin officially introduced three paid subscription tiers: Standard (68 yuan/month), Enhanced (200 yuan/month), and Advanced (500 yuan/month). With the paid system now live, all Douyin products have integrated the latest Douyin 2.1 series large model, delivering substantial improvements in content quality and operational efficiency.
Officials emphasized that this paid offering will not affect the daily usage rights of free users, instead providing differentiated options for those with higher productivity demands.

Examining the global market, Douyin’s pricing strategy clearly prioritizes cost-effectiveness. In contrast, ChatGPT ’s subscription threshold is significantly higher, with the Plus version costing approximately 135 RMB per month and the Pro version reaching up to 677 RMB monthly. By comparison, Douyin’s Standard Edition at 68 RMB per month is roughly half the price of its counterparts. Annually, Douyin’s Advanced Edition costs less than one-third of ChatGPT’s corresponding tier. Given the simultaneous upgrades to core functions and model performance, this pricing structure undoubtedly provides a stronger competitive edge in the domestic market.
Furthermore, other leading overseas models like Claude and Gemini employ similar tiered payment structures, generally maintaining high price points. By lowering usage costs for Chinese users to a reasonable level, Douyin aims to pioneer an AI commercialization path tailored to China’s market characteristics while maintaining international competitiveness, ensuring robust model computing power and service stability.
Industry experts believe Douyin’s paid service launch signals a shift from expanding user scale to monetizing existing users. As large model development competition intensifies, the key for Douyin to succeed in the next phase of competition lies in whether this high-cost-effectiveness strategy can retain a broad base of ordinary users while effectively screening and converting high-quality enterprise and professional creator segments.
